Where are all the homeschoolers??

Since we’ve moved to Kerrville (in Feb.) everyone – EVERYONE – tells us there are “tons” of homeschoolers here.  But where are they???

There is virtually zero presence on the web for anything homeschool related in Kerrville.  That’s why I decided to start this blog.  I have a family blog called Do I Need A Bigger Plate? and a cloth diaper blog All About Cloth Diapers.  What’s one more responsibility?? lol

Since this is the first post, I’ll introduce myself and my family.  I’m Autumn.  I am 31 and have been married to my wonderful husband for almost 11 years! We have 4 beautiful children: Haley, Haven, Paisley and Sterling.

We have been homeschooling since 2005ish.  Haley was eager to start learning with workbooks very early.  We’ve learned though that every child is different…WAY different.  Haven is just beginning to learn letters and writing.

Paisley is 2 and as we sit down to Greek at night she is eager to participate.  Unfortunately, she thinks the english “c” is the greek “kse”.

And of course little Sterling is just hanging out, soaking it all in.  At 4 months we think he is hands-down the smartest baby!

We began homeschooling with certain ideas about what was best. But when Michael read “Teaching the Trivium” by Bluedorn the lightbulb went on and everything just clicked.

I will be posting a post I published a month or so ago on my family blog about our daily schedule.  At first it seemed impossible but once I did it a week it is simple.  Aren’t all new things like that?!

Wow! Your children sound very smart! Great job of parenting! Keep up the great job and who knows, your children may be the leaders of the world for their generation. Of coarse the critics of homeschooling will still be concerned about their ‘socialization’! What else could they find to pick on? God bless!

Hi Autumn, I love your website. In answer to your question, this homeschooling family moved from Kerrville about 10 years ago! Plus my kids are all grown up and gone from the nest. If you send me an email, I’ll be glad to give you some names of friends in Kerrville. Hopefully, they should be able to help you out in finding some other homeschooling families. God bless!

Does your librarian know any homeschool groups? is there a bulletin board there or at the grocery store where you could post a note asking to start a co-op? How about your church? The groups in my area are only just now getting on the internet, it’s more of a word of mouth thing to find them – but with a 4 month old, you may have more internet time than talking time!

Have you tried looking on yahoo groups (or something similar) to find them? Umpteen years ago there used to be a website that listed all the Texas support groups, but I don’t know where it was. Then again that would be hard to keep up with.

I know our group (in East Texas pineywoods) is fairly loosy-goosy. In fact some of them I am more familiar with their name (from the yahoo group) than their face.

i really think the non-xenophobic homeschoolers are right here, a hop-skip-and-jump away in blogsville.

we’re in a north dallas burb boasting thousands of home-students in the 25 mile radius and rarely cross 4 or 5 a week. and those are typically stand-off’ish.

but we count our after-3:30 blessings, as well as the friends we can drive to. nonetheless, our focus is still to be revolutionary and world impacting, an attribute we had trouble plugging into via “regular” routes.

be strong. be encouraged. and bloom right where you’re at– wildflowers are amazing…
