Not Promised

What does God promise us?

“I have come into the world as light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.” John 12:46

“Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” John 1:12

“He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak ” Isaiah 40:29

“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand.” John 10:27.28

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you.” Psalm 32:8

“I will lead the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them, I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth. These are the things I will do; I will not forsake them.” Isaiah 42:16

“Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.” Jeremiah 29:12

“But when the kindness and love of God our Saviour appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Saviour. ” Titus 3:4-6

“For the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.” Proverbs 2:5

God doesn’t promise us that we will never endure hardships, pain or sorrow.  Quite the contrary, he tells us we will experience many trials.  Life will not be easy.  But why?

My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. James 1:2

There are different ways to approach this question. I am satisfied with Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

I know that God reveals all I need to know. Mark 4:22 For there is nothing hidden which will not be revealed, nor has anything been kept secret but that it should come to light.

Still there are those who cannot rest with these beautiful truths. They need some tangible reason.  Like we could ever fully understand the wisdom of the Almighty Creator! For them I would say:

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct[a] your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6

All scripture is God breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training and righteousness.  2 Tim.3:15.16

Everyday we hear of or experience bad things happening to good people.  Unbelievers cry out “Why? Why?”  Christ followers, true followers, should be comforted by God’s sovereignty and love.

This week a passionate man of God, one that I have much respect for, will visit a neurosurgeon about a mass in his frontal lobe.  His wife recently gave birth to their 3rd child, he is young, he is healthy. Many will ask why this would happen to his family.  But I know without a doubt that Matt Chandler is embracing this challenge. No doubt.

If you would like to pray for Matt Chandler and his church The Village Church I know he would be humbled.
